The Project: the refurbishment of a former fire station to provide a business training centre.
The Client: London Borough of Haringey
The Brief: the old fire station at Tottenham Green had been underused for some time and was in need of investment and a new use. The proposed scheme for the local educational authority provided a new training centre, offices and business incubator units located within the converted engine house, a new build office and the refurbished fireman’s cottages.
The Solution: The conversion of the Grade II Listed fire station created some problems as the interior had previously been remodelled with the loss of the engine doors. These were reinstated with replacement red doors and new frameless glass screens to provide the environmental protection and the public face to the development. To the rear the new build office was contemporary in its design but echoed the materials of the adjacent engine house.
The scheme was completed in 1999 and is still operational.
